Yeti ASR 5 Alloy
The Yeti AS-R 5 Alloy is a bike that is equally at
home on manicured, perfect single-track or off the beaten path. With a
127mm travel rear suspension, it offers greater bump absorption than
their AS-R, but still pedals like a flat-out race machine. At just 5.5 lbs, the AS-R 5 embodies the dream convergence of weight, durability, trail function, and price.
The AS-R 5 Alloy is more than a longer legged version of
their AS-R race bike. In reality it's light enough to race and is
especially suited for marathon events, but it begs for backwoods
adventures. Designed for either a 120 or 140mm fork, the extra inch of
travel over the AS-R will keep you fresher for longer. With the shorter
of the two forks, it sports a 68 degree head angle. The steering feels
more like a race bike and the AS-R 5 will give up very little to your
weight weenie friends on their latest uber bikes. For those that prefer
more unruly adventures, the AS-R 5 can handle that too. With a longer
fork, the head angle tilts back to 67 degrees. The resulting stability
begs for loose and technical terrain. The alloy front triangle is stiff
and lightweight, providing a rock steady platform for the suspension to
do its work. The low slung top tube acts as a sturdy attachment point
for the Fox RP23 rear shock and allows plenty of standover clearance
for unexpected dismounts. The shapely aluminum top and down tubes
converge at the tapered headtube. The combination 1-1/8" top and 1.5"
bottom headset cups strike a perfect balance between weight,
durability, and steering precision. Yeti employs carbon
fiber for the rear triangle. The whole unit is molded as one piece with
massive chainstays, defining its lightweight and flex-free behavior.
All of the suspension pivots house sealed cartridge bearings for a
smooth ride and titanium pivot hardware is used to shave weight. Even
though it has five inches of wheel travel, the AS-R 5 is no couch ride.
It has a firm suspension feel that allows for efficient pedaling. It
features interchangeable dropouts and comes standard with those
designed for a QR 10mm rear axle. For an additional charge, dropouts
are available that accept the Syntace X-12 (12x142mm) rear axle. Given the intended multi-purpose nature of the AS-R 5, it also comes with cable guides for a telescoping seatpost. The Yeti AS-R 5 Alloy
is available in sizes XS, small, medium, large, and XL and comes in
three colors -- White/Turquoise, Slate, and Black. It requires a 34.9mm
traditional bottom pull front derailleur and a 30.9mm seatpost. The
tapered headtube takes a Chris King 1.5 Tapered No Threadset or
similar with press-in cups for the 1-1/8" top and 1.5" bottom. It has a
standard 73mm BB shell. 5.5lbs (2500g)
