Hi Johnny Your question is very general. Here are a few things to consider before you buy a bike Price (You have worked out already) Type of riding. Cross Country, Free riding or Basic general trails Hard Tail or Dual Frame Once you start riding are you planing to get a little more serious or just be the casual rider. Have a chat to Rob at Trailmix. He has a very good range of Kona bikes that will fit your needs and budget. Plus the service and knowledge is A1 Cheers Wayne

As stated above it does depend on the type of riding you want to do. But judging from the question you’re just starting out so you unlikely to jump straight into Free Riding or DH. If so then a more XC or AM bike is what you’re after. Hard tail is the source and where you should start it will develop your skills more. I started on an 800-1000$ hard tail with V-brakes and loved every minute of it. I moved to a dually for a few years and now I'm back on a hard tail as are most of my mates. A dually is great but unless you go the big $Dollars$ you pushing around a lot of unnecessary weight to learn on. If you are still riding in 12 months time then you will not have to worry because if you are like me you will have one of each bike. Rob at Trailmix is the man he will fix you up with the perfect bike.
